FURTHER READING

The following is a deliberately limited list of books that are recommended for further reading for someone who wishes to deepen their knowledge of Civic and Constitutional Republicanism. The list contains only books that are good value and worth buying.

There are many fine academic texts on Republicanism but they do not serve well the general reader who is interested in Republicanism as a live issue that can mean something to the general British public now.

(By the way, the best first introduction to Republicanism, Republican History, Constitutionalism, Political Philosophy and Monetary Reform is contained within www.repubicans.org.uk !!)

REPUBLICAN THEORY

Encyclopaedia Britannica 2008 Ultimate Edition (DVD)

Britannica together with the Wikipedia provide the best accessible sources on Republicanism and Constitutions - better than any individual book. Entries have to aim to be factual, impartial, comprehensive and concise.

Buy and research for yourself

TIP If you can find older CD-ROM editions of Britannica which may be cheaper, they contain exactly the same text but with fewer bells and whistles, and they won't clog up your computer.

Civic Republicanism (Paperback)
by Iseult Honahan

The essential modern guide to civic republicanism and one of the best introductions to republicanism.

Although an acedemic book it is highly absorbing, concise and readable.

it is not afraid in the later sections to confront directly issues of contemporary politics.

Highly relevant and a must read.

Roman Republic in Political Thought (Paperback)
by Fergus Millar

Because the Roman Republic is so fundamental to understanding what Republicanism as an ideal is about, the book operates as an excellent introduction to Republican theory and its history. And there are very few of those around.

It naturally takes the focus away from a simple "Down with the Crown" type of Republicanism and portrays Republican thought as a long tradition that has evolved. Academic text but very readable and absorbing. Buy and discover.

GENERAL HISTORY OF REPUBLICANISM IN BRITAIN

The Republic of Britain: 1760 to the Present (Hardcover)
by Frank Prochaska

The best general history of Republican thought in Britain following the period of the First Republic (Commonwealth) in the seventeenth century. A pessimistic but balanced and perceptive assessment of current trends and possibilities. Detailed research and full of information. Excellent, entertaining read. Buy to find out what television histories won't tell you.

FIRST REPUBLIC PERIOD IN BRITAIN

The Tyrannicide Brief: The Man Who Sent Charles I to the Scaffold (Paperback)
by Geoffrey Robertson

Passionate, gripping history of the First Republic told around the story of an unsung martyr of British Republicanism, the lawyer, John Cooke, who prosecuted Charles I at his trial. Written by one of Britain's current leading Republicans. Read the Amazon reviews. Buy and put everything else aside.

BRITISH CONSTITUTION

The English Constitution (Oxford World's Classics) (Paperback)
by Walter Bagehot

Published in 1867 this is still an essential guide to the English constitution. Unashamedly an apology for the British constitutional monarchy, it perceptiveness means it will always be good to think with, even if you don't agree with it. And it is for the most part a good read.

Bagehot criticises Montesquieu's take on the British constitutional practice without acknowledging that the latter was writing 100 years before him. And he makes much of the fact that the American presidential system means the president is at a distance from Congress. But of course that is the entire point. In this, as in his patronising attitude to those who revere the Monarchy, he shoots himself in the foot, but he is endearing for all that.

He sees that the British Constitution has Republican elements without making the usual mistake of confusing these with democratic elements.

Read the excellent introduction by Miles Taylor in this edition and much will become clear. Buy and know the best argument against Republicanism in Britain which unintentionally becomes an argument for Republicanism.

ECONOMICS

The Grip of Death: A Study of Modern Money, Debt Slavery and Destructive Economics (Paperback)
by Michael Rowbotham

Most people probably do not know that the word "mortgage" means "grip of death". The nice title is a pointer to everything that is good about this book: revelation, research, perceptiveness, style. Nothing said here could reasonably be added to the Amazon reviews.

Sometimes to see the truth you have to make the mental leap of seeing that the truth is worse than you could imagine.

This book was published in 1997 and everything it says is absolutely current only more so. Buy and read but be cautioned you may need medication to stay calm.

ENLIGHTENMENT

The Western Intellectual Tradition: From Leonardo to Hegel (Paperback)
by J. Bronowski and Bruce Mazlich

Published in 1960 this book is now out of print but easily obtainable second hand through Amazon or Abebooks.

Vastly superior to Bronowski's The Ascent of Man (and without the doubly politically incorrect title) probably due to the contributions of the co-author. Its compass strays beyond the eighteenth century Enlightenment but its focus is always there. The chapter on Montesquieu is masterful.

Most books on the Enlightenment tell you how difficult it is to define. This book just goes ahead and does it. Buy and cherish.
